WRH JROTC and Local Veteran

On Wednesday, November 12, Wallace-Rose Hill High School had the privilege of honoring one of its very own hometown heroes, Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Monte Thorne, in celebration of Veterans Day. The Wallace-Rose Hill band, JROTC, students, and staff gathered to surprise Sergeant First Class Thorne with a heartfelt ceremony featuring the presentation of colors and a series of patriotic songs.

Originally from Rocky Mount, SFC Thorne dedicated 22 years of service to the United States Army before continuing his commitment to leadership and education as the JROTC instructor at Wallace-Rose Hill for 23 years. He was instrumental in the creation of the JROTC program at WRH in 1994, which began as a satellite program under East Duplin High School. By 1996, under his leadership, Wallace-Rose Hill’s JROTC became an independent and thriving program.

AIG Student Athlete Uses Art to Give Back

Payton Tyndall is the rare athlete who lets her performance speak for itself. A standout pitcher and volleyball player, she brings focus and grit to every play, yet remains one of the most humble students on campus. Beyond the scoreboard, she contributes to our school culture in a more literal sense: as a gifted visual artist, she "moonlights" as a muralist for the media center. Her seasonal window paintings have become a cherished school tradition, providing a vibrant backdrop for her peers while showcasing a creative depth that matches her athletic prowess.

Wallace Rose Hill fosters a dynamic learning environment by offering diverse courses, clubs, and opportunities that cater to students’ individual needs. This helps students discover their passions, develop skills, and achieve success. Duplin County Schools (DCS) stands out with its Pathway with Purpose approach, driven by STEAMA, which supports the unique needs of all students. This allows me to integrate STEAMA into my classroom, providing students with hands-on learning experiences. I offer students opportunities to explore curiosity through collaborative discussions, hands-on activities, and interactive projects, encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork to enhance their learning.

Duplin County Schools has given me the opportunity to take part in real world experiences for my future career in healthcare. The county has many academies such as the Duplin Health Sciences Academy, which has allowed me to visit various medical facilities and discover all the possibilities in the healthcare field.  I really enjoy all of the opportunities to get involved as a student at Wallace Rose-Hill. The school also provides space for students to voice their opinions, concerns, and even take on leadership roles. Wallace-Rose Hill is special because it offers us plenty of time to complete all of our work and exceed in our classes through different learning environments.
