Letters of Recommendation

Helpful Tips

DO

DON'T

Who do I ask for a letter of recommendation?

Ask people that know you personally! Close teachers, bosses, church leaders, coaches, previous employers, etc.

Don't ask people who don't know you well! If the person is not able to speak on behalf of your character and your achievements, do not ask them.

How do I ask for a letter of recommendation?

Email, call, or ask in person before you assign someone to write your letter of recommendation.

Don't assume that someone will be willing and able to write you a letter. It takes a lot of time and effort to write a letter, so you must ask them first.

What information should I give to my recommender?

Send your recommender a list of your activities, accomplishments, and goals! Even if this person knows you super well, having a list of things to include will help them remember.

Don't assign someone as a recommender then never mention it to them again. Communicate your deadline and expectations.

What if my recommender forgets to submit their letter?

Email your recommender a reminder of the deadline. Ask them if there is anything they need help with and when they expect to submit it.

Don't assume that they will remember to submit your letter. It never hurts to check in throughout the process. Also, it shows that you are responsible!
